ZORLU and HESCO ink agreement on establishing wind farm for power generation Zorlu Enerji (www.zorlu.com), the first company to establish wind farm for power generation in Pakistan, on Saturday (17.01.2009) signed Energy Purchase Agreement with HESCO (Hyderabad Electric Supply Company) for purchase of 6 MW electricity generated at the company’s facility in Jhimpir – developed and designed by IPEK energy. The agreement was signed by Mr. Murat Sungar Bursa, President Zorlu Enerji, on behalf of Zorlu Eneji and Mr. Karim Buksh Qureshi, CEO HESCO representing HESCO. The signing ceremony was witnessed by Chairman AEDB / Minister Water &Power, Raja Pervez Ashraf and Turkish Ambassador Mr. Engin Soysal. NEPRA has awarded tariff of US scents 12.1057 per kWh, which is cheaper than the electricity generated from thermal sources. The power generated from the first phase would be evacuated to Jhimphir grid station by HESCO and would be sufficient to electrify 6900 homes in Hyderabad region. The Zorlu Enerji wind farm would be one of the cleanest power plants in the country displacing 10,500 tonnes of carbon dioxide every year, as compared to a fossil fuel power plant. Harnessing the strong winds coming from south west, the wind farm is first commercial wind power project of the country, comprising 5 towers in the first phase with an installed capacity of 1.2 MW wind turbine generator per tower. The wind farm project, which is in subsequent phases would be expanded to a 50 MW wind farm, is currently using gearless VENSYS 62 with 1.2 MW technology. President Zorlu Enerji (Pvt) Ltd., Mr. Murat Sungar Bursa speaking on this occasion said incentives offered by Pakistan ’s Renewable Energy Policy were a major factor in the company’s decision to invest here. He described AEDB’s “open for business” attitude as refreshing. He announced that capacity of the wind farm shall be enhanced to 300 MW upon successful completion of 50 MW phase. AEDB acts as a one window facility for the investors in renewable energy sector to promote the use of renewables in the country.

First Wind Farm in Pakistan
Under supervision of IPEK, ZORLU (www.zorlu.com) has successfully completed the erection of the first wind turbine (Vensys-CKD) in Pakistan on Dec 3, with a capacity of 1.2 MW in Jhampir, Sindh. After the completion of first Phase by Jan 2009, the project will provide electricity to 60,000 households. The plant will reach a capacity of 49.5 MW in the second phase with plans to increase the capacity up to 300 MW. ZORLU will then be providing electricity comparable to the generation capacity of the Karachi Nuclear Power Plant (KANUPP) in Pakistan. The project will provide totally green, renewable and indigenous resource. ZORLU Energy signed an agreement with the Pakistani Alternative Energy Development Board (AEDB, www.aedb.org) in 2006 to establish a wind farm in Pakistan. The second phase will include installation of 29 turbines (GODLWIND 1500) with a capacity of 43.5 MW that is expected to be completed till December 2009. The power generated from the first phase would be evacuated to the Jhampir Grid Station by HESCO. All the equipment for the first phase of 6 MW including the towers, rotors, transformers and other auxiliary equipment has been transported to the site. Mr. Murat Sungur Bursa, the CEO of ZORLU, assured his company’s commitment to contribute to Pakistan’s national development while maintaining the highest level of customer satisfaction with a professional approach focused on a dynamic and flexible structure, and continuously providing high-quality service.
